Moving from ‘More’ to ‘Meaning’
Dear friend,
For generations, families have dreamed of creating a better life. A safe home. Financial security. Opportunities for their children. The freedom to pursue their passions.
These dreams have inspired countless people to work hard, overcome obstacles, and create meaningful lives.
But today, many families are beginning to ask a deeper question:
What does a truly successful life look like?
When the Dream Becomes Disconnected from Well-Being
The traditional American Dream has often been associated with achievement and accumulation: A larger home. A successful career. More income. More possessions. A comfortable lifestyle.
These goals are not wrong.
But perhaps we need to ask: Have we confused having more with living better?
Because a family can have many outward signs of success while quietly struggling with:
- stress
- exhaustion
- loneliness
- poor health
- lack of connection
- limited time together
A dream that requires us to sacrifice our health, relationships, and joy may need to be reimagined.

A New Vision of Prosperity
What if the next version of the American Dream focused less on accumulation and more on flourishing?
Imagine a family dream centered around:
Health
Creating homes that support physical, emotional, and environmental well-being.
Connection
Prioritizing relationships over constant busyness.
Learning
Encouraging curiosity, creativity, and lifelong growth.
Stewardship
Teaching children that caring for the Earth is part of caring for themselves.
Purpose
Helping each family member discover their unique gifts and how they can contribute.
Teaching Children a Different Definition of Success
Children, teenagers, and even young adults learn what success means by watching us.
They notice what we celebrate.
They notice what receives our attention.
They notice whether we value: The newest possessions…or meaningful experiences.
Competition…or cooperation.
Appearance…or character.
Achievement…or compassion.
One of the greatest gifts we can give children is not simply the opportunity to succeed.
It is helping them understand what success truly means.
The Family as the First Classroom
This connects beautifully with other education themes I’ve talked about.
The home is the first classroom.
Before children learn about the world, they learn from the world we create around them.
They learn through:
- The conversations we have.
- The way we treat nature.
- The ways we shop.
- The meals we prepare.
- The medicines we consume.
- The way we handle challenges.
- The choices we make when no one is watching.
Every family is teaching a philosophy of life—whether intentionally or unintentionally.
Imagining a New American Dream
Imagine a future where success is measured not only by economic growth, but by:
- Children who are healthy and emotionally resilient.
- Communities that volunteer to support one another.
- Food systems that nourish people and the planet.
- Homes that provide peace and belonging.
- Families who have time to learn, create, and connect.
- A society that values wisdom as much as achievement.
This is not a rejection of progress. It is an expansion of progress. Perhaps the greatest question is not: “How much can we achieve? “Perhaps it is: “How beautifully can we live? “The next generation does not need us to create a perfect world. They need us to model a meaningful one.
An Invitation:
Every family has the opportunity to redefine success.
